Knowing how to tie the right knot can mean the difference between success and struggle when securing gear, building shelters, or even performing first aid. Square Knot (Reef Knot)
Use: Joining two ropes of equal thickness together.
Steps:
Take one end of each rope.
Pass the right rope over and under the left rope.
Now, pass the left rope over and under the right rope.
Pull tight. The knot should lie flat and symmetrical.
Bowline Knot
Use: Creating a fixed loop that won’t slip, ideal for rescue and hauling.
Steps:
Make a small loop near the end of the rope.
Pass the working end of the rope through the loop from underneath.
Wrap the working end around the standing part of the rope and pass it back through the loop.
Tighten by pulling the standing end.
Clove Hitch
Use: Quickly securing a rope to a post or tree.
Steps:
Wrap the rope around the post.
Cross the rope over itself and wrap it around the post again.
Tuck the end under the second loop and pull tight.
Taut-Line Hitch
Use: Adjustable knot for tensioning guy lines on tents or tarps.
Steps:
Wrap the rope around a fixed object.
Loop the working end around the standing part of the rope twice.
Make an additional loop outside the first two loops.
Slide the knot to adjust tension.
Figure Eight Knot
Use: Stopping the end of a rope from slipping through a pulley or eyelet.
Steps:
Make a loop in the rope.
Wrap the working end around the standing part.
Pass the working end through the loop and pull tight.
